entry: Hi Greg, thanks for your kind words. My apologies, I completely forgot to put my email address in those documents from the class! My email address is jeff [AT] jeffpatton.net, feel free to email me your questions.

Hi Neville: No problem, which material did you have in mind? The colored car paints or the "primer" black matte finish version?

entry: Hey Jeff, great new blog entry. I was sort of confused with all the gamma talk in your masters class, but this is simple and effective for the problems I was having.

I was also wondering how you created the hillside / rocks in your most recent car render. Is it post or is it 3D?

entry: nwiz25 - I've just added that material (and a few others) to my .mat file, the link is in the latest blog entry.

Jason - Thanks. The only geometry in that scene is a ground plane and the car. The environment is one of Dosch's new "HDRI Car Background" maps. More info on those can be found here: http://www.doschdesign.com/products...ackgrounds.html

entry: Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the gammatrick, but I do see a strange behaviour. When I save the file and move it to Photoshop, the overal color is much darker. I made a printscreen of the render in max and compared it to the saved image, here you can see the difference very cleary. To me it seems that the display of 3ds MAX in total is affected by the gamma correction and not only in the rendered image.
That doesn't seem like a good workflow then is it?

entry: Hi Fellazb,
I do not have any difference in the rendered image vs. what's in the 3dsmax VFB with this method. Perhaps when you modified the gamma settings you didn't restart 3dsmax? Due to a display issue it's best to restart 3dsmax when you adjust the gamma settings. I completely forgot to mention that in my post, I've just modified that blog entry to add that info. (sorry)

Or perhaps you accidentally changed the actual gamma setting instead of the bitmap gamma? That would certainly affect the rendered output.

entry: Hi Jeff,

I figured out what went wrong.

When changing the bitmap output I had to apply the "Enable Gamma Correction" The default here was 2.2 and I left that. I only changed the input gamma to 1.6
After changing the display gamma to 1.0 it all was o.k Thank you very much for this, cuz I also encountered washed out texture problems in my renderings. I corrected this in the output panel of the diffuse texture, but this is much faster! Thanks.
