Hi Marco, I updated that last blog entry to add the settings. It's a simple setup, I put the hdr in the scene environment map slot. Then added a skylight to the scene and setup the final gather. Just keep in mind those settings aren't for speedy renders (but surprisingly, it wasn't as slow as I expected it to be).
The hdri is generating those shadows because of the high fg settings I used and the fact that it's a good .hdr file. BTW, the .hdr file is the kitchen probe that's readily available online.
Jeff, you are the man!
Your insight into Mental Ray has helped me a lot. Ever thought of realeasing a DVD?
Your caustics info is great. Looking forward to the mental ray material library.
cheers Matt
tm82 - Hi, I'm not located in Lexington Kentucky.
Meers - Hi, Thank you for the kind words. I'm working on releasing some training material for mental ray/3dsmax now.
Neilindian - Hey, I just replied to your thread.
Hey, Jeff, I recently had a problem with the A&D shader with caustics. Just to make sure you didn't do the same thing I did: goto the "advanced rendering options" pannel on the A&D shader and make sure that the "Refract light and generate Causic effects" option is enabled (The default is "Use tranparent shadows") That fixed the behavior for me.
Thank you Dashkevicz, you're right, I did not have that option enabled. After reading your post I thought that would fix the problem with my test scene for sure. But I ran a test render with that option enabled and oddly enough it still produced the same result. Looks like I'll have to create a new scene and verify if it's just something quirky with this current test scene.
