entry: Hey Jeff thanks for posting the .obj. One of my main concerns relates to how those types of scenes are lit. If you could give me a bit more insight as to how to create the full scene and not only the geo that would be great. Ps. I think the icing looks great.

entry: Well, you'll want to light the scene so that the "6inch_grid.tif" image when rendered closely matches the look of the actual bitmap. Meaning, the grid pattern is primarily 25% black or R191,G191,B19. So, when you render the scene you'll want that grid bitmap to be close to 25% black (191,191,191) in the rendered output. At this point you're probably saying...ok, so how bright do I need to make the my source? I don't know...it depends on your tone-mapping/gamma/exposure settings and light settings in whatever application you're using. I think you'll just have to run some test renders to find the right balance.

entry: jeff i have a cool idea for a tutorial or your next blog post. maybe make it a challenge on viz depot.

in the style of the great arch viz masters themselves, UNIFORM, create an exterior/interior that extends beyond standrard lighting techniques. Bring a bit of hollywood into it - dramatic lighting and so on, a lot of the work we see today is general night and day shots, which is perfect, but i would love to know and hear other peoples ideas and techniques for adding drama and narrative to shots, making the lighting interesting etc.

what are your thoughts on this???

entry: daveb867 - Sounds fun. I have some reference photos of some very cool lighting setups in night clubs that I've always wanted to try and recreate. Perhaps that would make for a nice challenge at the vizdepot. I'll offer it as an idea to the other mods there and see what they think.

SHOCKproof - Thank you for the kind words. Best wishes to you too my friend.

entry: Great update Jeff. Can you use portals for interior lights rather than using a photometric one?

I wish I could afford to have you come up for a day of training :(

entry: siliconbauhaus - Yes, you can use the sky portal lights as interior light sources just like photometric area lights. Just keep in mind that you can't use IES profiles with it or change it to a spotlight, etc., like you can a photometric light source.
